The DomQuartier Salzburg is a unique Baroque cultural museum complex and seat of power located in the historic heart of Salzburg’s Old Town. It unites ecclesiastical and secular architecture into a vast, interconnected tour route. This unique circuit takes visitors through the magnificent State Rooms of the Residenz, the Residenzgalerie, the Cathedral Museum, and the St. Peter’s Collection. It showcases the very places from which the Prince-Archbishops ruled as both spiritual and secular leaders for centuries. Additionally, it offers the famous view from the Cathedral’s orchestra loft directly into the interior of Salzburg Cathedral, as well as breathtaking vistas of the Old Town from the terraces.

In-Depth Look at the DomQuartier

The Residenz – Seat of the Prince-Archbishops

The State Rooms of the Old Residenz form the heart of the tour. This is where the powerful Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg resided, ruling simultaneously as high-ranking church officials and secular territorial princes.

• Rooms: Visitors walk through magnificent halls such as the Carabinieri Hall (which served as a ceremonial reception room), the Knights’ Hall, and the elegant archbishop’s apartments.
• Furnishings: The rooms impress with lavish stucco work, vast ceiling frescoes, exquisite tapestries, and historic tiled stoves, all reflecting the wealth and absolute authority of the rulers of that era.

The Residenzgalerie

The Residenzgalerie is also housed within the historic chambers of the Residenz. It displays a superb collection of European paintings dating from the 16th to the 19th century. The focus is on masterpieces of Dutch, Flemish, Italian, and French painting, including works by renowned artists such as Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, and Jan Brueghel.

The Cathedral Museum and the Cathedral Precinct

Newly opened connecting passageways lead directly into the Cathedral Museum, housed in the North Oratory of Salzburg Cathedral.

• Sacred Art Treasures: On display are valuable liturgical objects, Gothic sculptures, and exquisite paintings and textiles from the holdings of the Archdiocese of Salzburg.
• The Cathedral Organ Loft: A definite highlight of the tour is the view from the organ loft down into the majestic nave of Salzburg Cathedral—a perspective usually reserved only for musicians.

The Art Treasures of St. Peter’s

The tour often concludes at the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter. As part of the DomQuartier, selected artworks from the centuries-old collection of the oldest monastery in the German-speaking world are showcased here.

The Terraces: An Architectural Highlight

Walking along the terraces above the rooftops of Salzburg is an unforgettable experience. The path leads directly onto the arcade walkway overlooking Cathedral Square, offering spectacular and unusual views of the Cathedral, Residenzplatz, Hohensalzburg Fortress, and the surrounding rooftops of the Old Town.

The following admission prices apply to the DomQuartier Salzburg during regular full operation (slightly reduced rates apply in the event of partial operation):

• Adults: €15.00 (reduced rate €12.00 for seniors, students, etc.)
• Youths & young adults (under 26 / ages 7–25): €5.00
• Children (ages 0 to 6): Free
• Family ticket: €32.00
• Groups (10 people or more): €12.00 per person

• Audio guide: Available as an optional add-on for €2.00.
• Free admission: Available for a one-time visit with the Salzburg Card or the Salzburger Land Card, among others.

By Car

• Pedestrian Zone: As the DomQuartier is located in the heart of the historic Old Town, there is no direct vehicle access or parking available in front of the building.
• Nearby Parking: We recommend using the surrounding underground garages and multi-storey car parks. The closest options are the Diemelgarage / Altstadt-Garage (accessible via Riedenburg or Kapitelplatz) and the Mirabell-Garage on the opposite side of the Salzach River. From there, you can easily walk to the DomQuartier entrance at Residenzplatz.

By Public Transport

• Central Stops: The nearest stops are “Rathaus” or “Mozartsteg” (served by various trolleybus lines), as well as “Makartplatz,” located slightly further north.
• Walking Route: From these stops, it is just a short walk through the picturesque alleys of the Old Town directly to Residenzplatz.
