At a Glance
Red Bull Hangar-7 at Salzburg Airport is an architectural masterpiece, a living aviation museum, and an internationally renowned hotspot for fine dining and art. Its unique architecture features a spectacular glass-and-steel structure reminiscent of an aircraft wing, blending futuristic design with a fascination for technology. The hangar houses Red Bull’s historic collection of airworthy aircraft, helicopters, and Formula 1 race cars. It is also home to the multi-award-winning Restaurant Ikarus—which hosts a rotating lineup of top international guest chefs each month—as well as several exclusive bars and cafés.
Architecture and Concept
Hangar-7 was designed by architect Volkmar Burgstaller and opened in 2003. The building comprises approximately 1,200 tons of steel and 380 tons of special glass. The self-supporting, shell-like structure creates an impression of transparency and lightness while providing optimal protection for the exhibits housed within. The concept behind the venue is the fusion of apparent opposites: technology and art, mobility and aesthetics, culinary enjoyment and adventure.
The Collection: The Flying Bulls and More
The heart of the hangar is the Flying Bulls’ collection of aircraft and technical equipment. Unlike traditional museums, almost all the historic aircraft and helicopters here are in fully airworthy condition and are regularly maintained and flown.
- Historic Aircraft: Rare classics (such as the Douglas DC-6, North American B-25 Mitchell, or vintage Alpha Jets).
- Helicopters: Various helicopter models, including the exclusive BO 105, capable of aerobatic maneuvers.
- Motorsport: The exhibition is complemented by historic Formula 1 cars and racing vehicles from the Red Bull universe.
Art and Culture
Beyond aviation, Hangar-7 serves as an extraordinary gallery. Regularly changing art exhibitions showcase contemporary artists and photography alongside the aircraft, lending the space a modern, urban character.
Gastronomy: A Hub of Culinary Excellence
Hangar-7 is not merely a museum but also a renowned culinary destination:
- Restaurant Ikarus: World-famous for its unique concept in which a different top international chef (often a Michelin-starred chef) creates the menu each month.
- Bars & Cafés: The Mayday Bar and the Carpe Diem Lounge-Café offer visitors a space to enjoy specialty coffees, snacks, or creative cocktails within a futuristic setting.

- Address for GPS: Wilhelm-Spazier-Straße 7A, 5020 Salzburg (or access directly via the airport grounds near Wolfgang-Pauli-Straße).
- Parking: Sufficient parking spaces (mostly free of charge) are generally available on-site for Hangar-7 visitors.
- Directions: Coming from the city center, follow Innsbrucker Bundesstraße (B1) towards the airport/Wals; signs indicating the way to Hangar-7 are posted along the route.
By public transport
- Bus line 2: The easiest connection from Salzburg city center or the main train station is trolleybus line 2.
- Stop: Get off at the “Kraftwerk Stern & Hafferl” stop or directly at the “Flughafen” (Airport) stop. From there, it is just a short walk to Hangar-7 (located on the southern part of the airport grounds, slightly away from the main terminal).
