For night owls, Singapore has an excellent bar and club scene to offer as well as a very special attraction of a different kind: the Night Safari. This is the world’s first night zoo, which has been one of Singapore’s most popular attractions since it opened in 1994, and not just among families.

The concept of the Night Safari

The name “Safari” is perhaps a little misleading. Because in fact the Night Safari is an ordinary zoo, which can be explored on foot or on an approximately half-hour ride on a small zoo train. What is unusual, however, is the Night Safari’s lighting concept. The Night Zoo only opens its doors in the evening after dark, and the enclosures of the nocturnal animals are illuminated with a special light that is brighter than moonlight, but still does not disturb the creatures in their nocturnal activities. Unlike normal zoos around the world, where nocturnal animals can usually only be seen sleeping, at Night Safari you can usually see the animals up close during their nocturnal activities and forays.

The animals of the Night Safari

The Night Safari site is located right next to Singapore Zoo. Night Safari is home to more than 2,500 animals from over 130 species, primarily from the Southeast Asia region. The 35-hectare park is covered with dense rainforest and divided into seven geographic zones, each showcasing animals from its respective region. Here one gets to see rare and in the wild often endangered animal species such as the Asian elephant, the Malaysian tapir, the Indian rhinoceros and the Malaysian tiger. Another highlight of the Night Safari are the two huge aviaries where Malaysian flying foxes and flying squirrels swoop around your ears.

The Night Safari follows the concept of an “open zoo”. Humane animals like deer are allowed to roam freely in the zoo. More dangerous animals live in closed enclosures, but these are separated from the public areas by natural barriers.
